A thunderstorm looms over the Canal Street Railroad Bridge.
The Canal Street Railroad bridge raises vertically to let Chicago River traffic pass beneath, then lowers to let Amtrak trains pass over the river. Now the only vertical lift bridge on the Chicago River, it was the heaviest vertical lift bridge in the country at the time of its construction in 1915.
